Reviewing for college entrance exams?
Take these tips

Of course you’d like to score higher in your college entrance exam! But you’re one of those who think that it takes sheer intelligence and luck to pass the most difficult college entrance exams (University of the Philippines’ UPCAT, Ateneo’s ACET and La Salle’s DLSUCET), think again.

“These days, when one’s future depends a lot on the quality f education that he or she gets (And believe me, where you finish college matters!), there are a number of ways with which you can ensure a high score in your college entrance exam,” explains Rossana Llenado, managing director of AHEAD Tutorial and Review Center, which offers college entrance exams review classes patterned after the UPCAT, ACET and DLSUCET.

Llenado offers the following tips on how to score high in college entrance exams.:

    • Decide which school you really want to get into.
    • Prepare adequately for college entrance exams. Take review classes that are geared towards the college entrance exams of the school(s) you want to get into. Don’t go for “comprehensive review classes.” Instead, opt for ones that’s designed to get you into the school that you want.
    • Take review classes seriously.
    • Practice taking a “timed” exam. You’ll have to learn how to budget your time because most college entrance exams have to finished within a certain period of time. While your review class may give you a simulated exam, you still have to practice at home to make you perform well under time pressure.
    • Take a refresher course when your scheduled college entrance exam draws near. At Ahead, students who take summer review classes are automatically entitled to a free refresher course when the entrance is near.

Here are other tips from Score Higher in UPCAT and Other College Admission Tests (second edition), which is published by Ahead (426-0-34 to 36 or 309 Katipunana Avenue, Loyola Heights, Quezon City) and is available in all National Book Store outlets:

BEFORE THE EXAM:

    • Review the various subjects included in the exams.
    • Psyche yourself up so that you can perform well under pressure.
    • Visit the venue of the exam ahead of schedule so that you won’t be all stressed up looking for the exam venue on the day.
    • Prepare your clothes the night before. Dn’t wear new clothes or shoes because they might turn out to be uncomfortable. You wouldn’t want to be distracted by a constantly itching back or a throbbing foot while you take your exam, would you?
    • Don’t sleep too early or too late the night before.

ON THE DAY OF THE EXAM

    • Arrive at the venue of the exam early, at least 30 minutes before the exam, so you can relax before plunging into a long and arduous exam.
    • Look for the comfort room ahead of time. So when nature calls, you’ll know exactly where to go.
    • Make yourself comfortable. This means wearing comfortable clothes and shoes. No miniskirts, plunging necklines or cropped tops that expose your midrib. No tight jeans or high heels.
    • Don’t drink milk, especially if you suffer from lactose intolerance, or run the risk of getting an upset stomach. You can’t be taking trips to the comfort room when you should be concentrating on the exam.
    • Don’t eat anything too heavy. It can slow down your mental functions. Hamburger __ would you believe __ has such an effect. Your snacks, however, have to be ready-to-eat. Don’t bring along anything messy, anything that has to be peeled or will require washing of hands, anything that has a strong odor or makes too much noise when eaten.
    • Eat chocolate only when you’re nearing the end of the exam.
    • Read and follow instructions carefully.]Listen to the proctor well as he gives instructions.
    • Don’t spend too much time on one item. Skip difficult items and go back to them only when you have time left to do so. Be conscious or have no answer.
    • Don’t leave the room until you are finished or the time is up __ even if you’re the only one left in the room. Don’t get intimidated by the speed of other examinees.
    • If you’ve done and the time is not yet up, try to review your answers and go back to items that you’ve initially skipped.
    • Be confident that you’ll make it.
