UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS

The University of Santo Tomas, the Pontifical and Catholic University of the Philippines, is a Dominican institution of higher learning. Under the inspiration and patronage of St. Thomas Aquinas, UST commits itself to the pursuit of truth and to the preservation, advancement and transmission of knowledge in the arts and sciences, both sacred and civil, through the use of reason illumined by faith.

The University of Santo Tomas is the oldest existing university in Asia and, in terms of student population, is the largest Catholic university in the world located in one campus.

In its long history, UST is known to be the cradle of saints, martyrs and heroes. It has engendered Philippine presidents, chief justices, national artists and a host of accomplished men and women whose expertise and prominence have spanned the globe.



DID YOU KNOW?
The seal of the University of Santo Tomas is a shield quartered by the Dominican Cross. Superimposed on the cross is the sun of Saint Thomas Aquinas, patron of Catholic schools, after whom the university is named. The sun is actually made similar to the Sun of May.

Encircling the Dominican cross are:

On the upper left is the papal tiara, indicating that the UST is a pontifical university.

The upper right shows the lion derived from the seal of Spain, indicative of royal patronage throughout the greater part of the university’s centuries-old existence.

The lower left is occupied by the sea lion taken from the seal of the City of Manila, the national capital, symbolizing the Republic of the Philippines.

The rose on the lower right is a symbol of the Blessed Virgin Mary under whose patronage the university was placed from its very beginnings.

The symbols are rendered in gold (except for the Dominican cross which is black and white), and are set on a field of light blue, the Marian color.

Entrance Exam: University of Santo Tomas Entrance Exam (USTET)

Examination Dates: 1st Sunday of August, last Sunday of October, 1st Sunday of December

Exam Coverage: Math, English, Science Applicants to the Conservatory of Music, the College of Architecture,
                              and the College of Fine Arts and Design are required to take special ability tests.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Application Procedures:

Applicants to the University of Santo Tomas Entrance Test (USTET) for college are required to:

1. Accomplish an application form.
2. Submit the following together with the accomplished application form:
    a. Clear photocopy of birth certificate;
    b. Two (2) 2” x 2” recent identical pictures with printed name and signature at the back;
    c. Pay the application fee.

For Freshmen Applicants:

1. The admission of freshmen applicants into the University of Santo Tomas is based on the following:
    a. Performance in the Entrance Examination administered by the Testing Center;
    b. Quotas and other requirements by the specific course/college units set up by the respective offices of the deans;
    c. Satisfactory performance in high school;
    d. Interviews, which are conducted by some colleges/units.

2. Upon being informed of his/her eligibility for admission, the applicant must submit the following credentials* to the Dean’s Office
    of the college he/she has been admitted to within the submission period:
    a. Original Form 138 (Report Card);
    b. Certificate of Good Moral Character from the principal, guidance counselor, or parish priest/pastor.

   * Falsification of such documents constitutes grounds for disqualification.

For Transferees:

The University limits applications for transfer to exceptionally meritorious cases.

A. No student with failure in any subject shall be accepted as a transferee.

B. A student who wishes to transfer to the University of Santo Tomas must submit the following documents to the Dean
    of the college/faculty where he/she wishes to transfer:
   1. A letter addressed to the Dean expressing the intention to transfer and indicating the program of interest;
   2. A clear photocopy of his/her transcript of records duly certified by the Office of the Registrar of the transferee’s school; and
   3. Certified of good moral character coming from the Dean and the Office for Student Affairs of the transferee.

C. The Dean shall then forward the certificate of good moral character to the University’s Office for Student Affairs for clearance.

D. Should the transferee merit a favorable evaluation, the Dean will endorse him/her to the Office of the Secretary General
   for approval to take the Transferee’s Qualifying Examinations to be administered by the Office for Admissions.

E. Placement in the program of interest is dependent on the following:
    a. Availability of slots;
    b. Results of the Transferee’s Qualifying Examinations;
    c. Grades found in the transcript of records duly certified by the transferee’s present school; and,
    d. Approval of the Secretary General.

F. Upon meeting the requirements for transfer, the applicant should accomplish the admission memo which includes submission
    of the transfer credentials to the Office of the Registrar and requires the final approval of the Secretary General.

For Foreign Applicants:

Foreign applicants may be admitted into the university as long as they recognize and respect its distinctive Catholic identity and satisfy all the requirements after the Registrar’s Office, in coordination with the Office of the Dean, has evaluated their records.

1. A non-immigrant student applying for admission must submit the following to the Registrar’s Office:
    a. TOEFL results or its appropriate equivalents;
    b. Scholastic records or official transcript of records in duplicate, duly authenticated by the Philippine Foreign Service Post in
        the student’s country of origin or legal residence*;
    c. Six (6) copies of a personal history statement (forms are available at the Registrar’s Office); and,
    d. Notarized affidavit of support, including bank statement, in duplicate.

   * If acceptable to the university, the said credentials will be submitted to the Department of Foreign Affairs, which shall
      endorse to the Philippine Foreign Service Post nearest the applicant’s residence the issuance of a student visa.

2. Before enrollment, the applicant is required to present his Alien Certificate of Registration (ACR).

3. Immigrants and permanent resident aliens are required to submit a verified copy of their ACR.

A. Santo Tomas Scholarship

- It is given to students with excellent academic performance.
* Valedictorian – 100% defrayal from tuition fee
* Salutatorian – 50% defrayal from tuition fee

B. Santo Domingo Scholarship

- It is given to students who excel in the arts, sports, and special skills.

For Music:
- The Conservatory of Music receives and screens application.

For Athletes:
- The Institute of Physical Education and Athletics Department receives and screens application.

C. San Lorenzo Ruiz Scholarship

- It is given to students who are in need of financial assistance in exchange for rendering working hours in the University.

- Defrayal of tuition fees, regular allowance based on the number of service hours rendered.

D. San Martin de Porres Scholarship

- It is given to deserving students in need of financial assistance.
